PARIHAR in association with Bengaluru City Police is taking steps towards women’s empowerment by providing skill development training. A Skill Development Training Centre was set up on March 8 on the eve of International Women’s Day for PARIHAR beneficiaries, underprivileged women living in the vicinity of the slums of Mysore Road and few police wives at CAR Police Quarters. This initiative can go a long way in improving the lives of underprivileged women by making them financially independent. It’s also commendable that the training is free of cost, making it accessible to women who may not have the means to pay for such training.

A six-month extensive free certificate course offered to the trainees by training them on how to cut and stitch various outfits, as well as how to make designed saree tassels and paper and cloth bags, the women are being equipped with marketable skills that can help them find employment or start their own micro-enterprises. The fact that job placement assistance is also provided is a significant bonusas it increases the chances of trainees being able to find work upon completing the training. Currently over 55 women have benefitted from this course and counting.

Overall, this initiative is a great step towards women’s empowerment and can have a positive impact on the lives of many women and their families.

SUCCESS STORIES OF PARIHAR’S SKILL DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

Naziya, aged 32, belongs to a low-income household and lives in Tippu Nagar on Mysore Road. She has been married for ten years and has two daughters and one son. Currently, she supports her family as the sole breadwinner as her husband who has been diagnosed with cancer is unable to support the family. Prior to being diagnosed, her husband used to sell kitchenware on the street. However, due to his frequent hospital visits for cancer treatment he is unable to work.

Naziya was able to complete PARIHAR’s Skill Development Tailoring Course and now has a steady source of income (Rs. 500-600 per day) to support her family.

Savithri is an earnest 27 year old woman from a police family. She has two children and lives in the CAR police quarters (her husband works in the police department). From a young age she was determined to be financially independent but on getting married and having children it became hard for her to work. On hearing about PARIHAR Skill Development Tailoring Course she grabbed the opportunity. Being already familiar with tailoring she enrolled for the course with the aim of upskilling and becoming a professional tailor.

On completing her course, she started taking tailoring orders in and around her home and now earns approximately Rs. 10,000 per month. Savithri says, “I am so happy that I am able to earn, now I can save for my children’s future.”

At 44 years old, Fathima is a widow with three children and lives in Vinayaka Nagar. Her husband was a tailor who passed away a year ago after which Fathima’s sisters began taking care of the family. A local introduced her to PARIHAR’s Skill Development Tailoring Course. She was keen and joined the course to learn how to use her husband’s sewing machine and continue his profession. After completing the 6-month course in January 2023, she is now confident that she can maintain and take care of her children.
PARIHAR’s Skill Development Training Centre has been able to positively impact the lives of so many women by providing them with the necessary skills and resources to become financially independent. It is truly empowering to see women taking charge of their lives and using their talents to create successful businesses and support their families.

TRIUMPH TALES & INSPIRING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Suchithra (E- Auto Beneficiary)

Myself Suchithra, I came to Parihar Vanitha Sahayavani as I faced domestic violence at home while I was pregnant. Later I decided to leave the house and as a single mother, I faced a lot of financial crisis and came to live with my parents with a 1 year old baby. My parents forced me to live with my husband irrespective of the abuse as their concept was to live with a husband no matter the consequences.

I thought to myself why women should lead such a life getting beaten every day. I felt that even I can have a life and future with my daughter taking good care of her and I can also achieve. That is when the E-Auto training program started in Parihar and I got ready to learn to drive. After the E-Auto driving training, I got an auto for daily rent which was difficult for me to afford.

Parihar and Bengaluru City Police with the help of donors provided me with my own E- Auto and my heartfelt gratitude to them. My life before getting E-Auto was that “I used to beg people with open arms for help including my parents who looked down on me but now I am in a position to help them and I have put my child in a school. I see tremendous changes in my life and I will forever be thankful to Parihar.

Shabeena (E- Auto Beneficiary)

I came to Parihar as my husband had left me and at that time I had no job. I worked as a housemaid, but the income was not sufficient for day to day expenses and my daughter’s school fees studying in 6th and 8th Grade. Counselling was provided to both of us and my husband decided to separate from us.

Later, I got an opportunity from Parihar to learn E-Auto driving and I was very interested. I took the E-Auto training and even got a new E-Auto from Parihar and Bengaluru City Police which has made me financially stable and now I am able to take care of my children and their school fees.

“E-Auto has helped me in paying my daughters school fees, for our daily needs and food. I am also currently able to save some money and it gives me great joy”.

Deepthi (Parihar Client and Skill Development Beneficiary)

Myself, Deepthi and I am 35 years old. I had come to Parihar Vanitha Sahayavani requesting counseling for me and my husband. In the counselling, my husband decided that he did not want to continue the relationship with me and my daughter.

The thought of my husband leaving me made me go into depression and during this period, Mrs. Rani Shetty (Jt. Secretary of Parihar) suggested me go to Parihar Skill Development Centre. I completed the 6 months course and learnt to stitch saree blouses, children’s clothes,
saree tassels and cloth bags. This made me come out of depression and gave me hope for the future. I even got a power sewing machine from Parihar which has helped to do more work and obtain a stable income and support my family. I even got financial support for my 4 year old daughter’s school fees from Parihar Makkala Sahayavani.

“Before I had a lot of financial struggles and burden as I have parents who are old and cannot work. I could not ask them for financial support and were leading our lives only with my father’s pension and Ration scheme. Now I’m financially stable and able to pay school fees for my child and also take good care of my parents. I get regular bulk orders to stitch bags through Parihar which has helped me achieve sustainable income”.

Raheela (Skill Development Beneficiary)

My name is Raheela and my husband is a school watchman and I am a housewife. We have 2 daughters, eldest daughter is in college and youngest in 7th grade. Running our family with day to day expenses was extremely difficult. During this period I heard about Free Tailoring Training being provided by Parihar in Police Quarters.

I requested in Parihar Office and joined the training and completed the 6 months certificate skill development training to learn more. I got a Power Sewing Machine from Parihar and started to Stitch at home.

Initially I learnt to stitch clothes and later learnt to stitch Cloth bags and purse varieties. I’m able to take bulk orders through Parihar and also small orders from my neighbours which helps us with extra income for my family. We were struggling a lot to pay fees for my children, but now with my husband’s income and my income, we are able to manage our families daily needs and even provide better education to my daughters.

We go to Stalls provided by Parihar and Bengaluru City Police which helps us to earn more. Before we used to not be able to have any savings. Now I’m able help provide for my family, give education to my daughters and also save money for their futures. All thanks to Parihar and Bengaluru City Police.
